When
should I do Celiac tests?
About two-and-a-half
years ago I started a gluten-free
diet, thinking it would help the
constant bloating, stomach aches,
and fatty stools that I was experiencing.
I did not have insurance and therefore
did not go to a doctor for a true
diagnosis. Now I'm wondering if
I truly have celiac disease or
not. Is there any way for a self-diagnosed
celiac to get a true diagnosis
without reverting back to consuming
gluten?

There
are genetic tests which are expensive,
and specialized research biopsies
which are even more expensive. Even
the unproven stool tests are expensive
and unreliable when you have been
off gluten. My advice is to stay
off gluten until you have insurance,
and then do the tests properly,
i.e., when you have been back on
gluten for a month. Health
and happiness,

Sleep
issues and Celiac
I’m writing about an 11-year
old boy who has shown some of the
symptoms of Celiac disease. He also
is having sleeping issues. To be
specific, he’s still wetting
the bed and he rarely sleeps though
the night. He can’t fall asleep
and he wakes throughout the night.
Do you believe there could be a
correlation?

You
must actively pursue the diagnosis
of celiac disease with a pediatric
gastroenterologist, as there may
be a relation. If so, treatment
with a gluten-free diet could help.
Health and happiness,
